Mike Gravel on Gay Rights

Sexuality can be a determining factor in certain rights alotted to individuals in the US. The benefits and definition of "marriage" are being challenged to consider gay couples and their intrinsic rights. This topic includes information about candidate positions on: gay marriage, civil unions, the U.S. military's "don't ask, don't tell policy", and federal benefits for same-sex couples.
Mike Gravel strongly supports gay marriage

"I resent religion saying that [marriage] is a religious term, it's not. Marriage preceded all forms of religion in civilization. Marriage is a commitment between two human beings in love. And understand me, I'm saying two human beings. They can be heterosexual, they can be two lesbians, they can be transgender, they can be two gays."

In 2007, Gravel said this in an open letter to the LGBT community: "For far too long, Democrats and Republicans have used morality to justify the second-class citizenship of gays and lesbians. Clinton, Edwards and Obama frequently claim their morality and religious upbringing prevent them from supporting marriage equality. What kind of a message do they send to young gays and lesbians when these politicians say that it would be immoral to fight for their right to marry? Unfortunately because the leading Democratic candidates couch their cowardice and hypocrisy in terms of religion and morality, the press and even some LGBT leaders have not challenged their opposition to marriage equality. I will use the HRC forum to tell the American public that denying gays and lesbians equal rights, including marriage, is IMMORAL."
