The Green Party strongly opposes unrestricted free trade

The Green Party believes that fair, safe, and environmentally sustainable trade is important for our standard of living and quality of life. The Greens oppose unrestricted free trade because it is often neither of these things.

The Green Party strongly opposes the involvement of New Zealand troops in military operations in Afghanistan

The Greens did not support the invasion of Afghanistan, and would like to see New Zealand’s military involvement limited to peacekeeping.

The Green Party strongly supports raising our overseas aid budget to 0.7 percent of Gross National Income

The Greens strongly support this. “The Greens would Increase New Zealand’s ODA budget to 0.7% of GNI by 2015 and ensure that this is used to support projects which are sustainable and conducive to climate stabilization, promote local participation and gender equality, and enhance the economic and social rights of the recipient countries”.

The Green Party is neutral on improving and renewing New Zealand's bi-lateral relationship with the United States

The Greens support the ongoing improvement and renewal of our relationship with the USA but not at the cost of our own sovereignty or our greater commitment to our standing in the Pacific and with the wider international community.

The Green Party opposes actively pursuing a Free Trade Agreement with the United States

The Greens do not currently support the proposed free trade agreement with the USA. “It is clear that the USA will try to undermine Pharmac, weaken restrictions on GE, and increase foreign ownership rights in any trade deal. We must not give way on these issues or we will live to regret it as the Australians already have”.
