The Green Party on Government and Leadership
The Greens do not support across-the-board cuts to the public service as a simple way to fund tax cuts. “A strong public sector is essential to well-functioning society. Any rationalisation of the public sector needs to be done on a case-by-case basis.”
The Green Party believes in retaining national ownership in key strategic assets
Foreign investment rules should not lead to the expatriation of profits from a country's productive assets, or the alienation of a country's land from its citizens. The Greens would reserve land ownership for New Zealand citizens and permanent residents only and apply more stringent conditions on overseas investment in our strategic assets.
The Greens “support the continuation of the MMP electoral system because it: delivers fair representation, has improved the proportion of women, Maori and ethnic minorities in Parliament, and retains local representation. We would oppose a referendum on MMP; In fact, we support the entrenchment of MMP along with the Maori seats.”
The Green Party does not support once again making the Privy Council New Zealand’s highest court. The Greens say the move to a New Zealand Supreme Court, ending the right of appeal to the Privy Council, was part of the process of decolonisation. “It signified a desire to chart our own course as a Pacific nation taking account of international, as opposed to imperial, law”.
The Green Party supports keeping TVNZ in state hands. Alongside this, the Greens would like more ‘made in NZ’ programming.
