Tom Tancredo on Abortion and Birth Control

This candidate has withdrawn from the election

Q: Would the day that Roe v. Wade is repealed be a good day for America? TANCREDO: After 40 million dead because we have aborted them in this country, that would be the greatest day in this country's history when that, in fact, is overturned.

Strongly opposes the Roe v. Wade decision of 1973

In fact, the Colorado Congressman has received an "A" grade from the National Right to Life Committee and says that, as president, he would work to bring about an end to Roe v. Wade, which he describes as "lousy law" that should be challenged. "We should think of a way to bring it again to the Supreme Court," the presidential candidate says, "because I think we have a chance of overturning it."

"I believe all of us would do exactly what we've said here, at least I guarantee I would do that and approve judges that would overturn Roe v. Wade."

Strongly opposes emergency contraception

According to Mr. Tancredo, a Colorado Republican, emergency contraception "cheapens human life and simply uses a woman's body to dispose of the child instead of a doctor."

Strongly opposes restrictions on medical procedures used during late term abortions

Voted YES on banning partial-birth abortions. HR 3660 would ban doctors from performing the abortion procedure called "dilation and extraction" [also known as "partial-birth" abortion]. The measure would allow the procedure only if the life of the woman is at risk.

Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2003: Vote to pass a bill banning a medical procedure, which is commonly known as "partial-birth" abortion. The procedure would be allowed only in cases in which a women's life is in danger, not for cases where a women's health is in danger. Those who performed this procedure, would face fines and up to two years in prison, the women to whom this procedure is performed on are not held criminally liable.

Bill sponsored by Santorum, R-PA; Bill S.3 ; vote number 2003-530 on Oct 2, 2003

Strongly opposes federal funding for birth control

Representative Tancredo opposes giving any federal funds for family planning to any organization where abortions occur.

Campaign Statement (phone call 10/29/2007)

Throughout my public career I have always maintained a deeply held conviction that abortion compromises the sanctity of human life. Tragically, our nation has ignored our founding principle that all individuals have a right to life and in doing so has failed to protect the most vulnerable among us, unborn boys and girls. I do not support federal funds going to Planned Parenthood or any other organization that promotes abortion. I will continue to do everything in my power to protect the defenseless, and to end the practice of abortion.

Supports sex education

"""ALEX HARRIS, THEREBELUTION.COM: My name is Alex Harris. I'm 18. The National Institutes of Health reports that one in five Americans has a sexually-transmitted disease, affecting one out of every four sexually-active teens. Without even addressing teen pregnancy abortion rates, it's clear that our public policies have not protected my peers. Meanwhile, 2.5 million American teens like me have taken public abstinence pledges, to save sex until marriage — the only 100%-proven effective solution and prevention for STDs. In the interest of fairness and effectiveness, would you bring abstinence-education funding onto equal ground with contraceptive-based education? Thank you.""
